Celebrating a Revolution

By Mary Andrade - Posted on 13 November 2009

We have another long weekend coming up as Mexico celebrates November 20th on November 16th. November 20th is the anniversary of the outbreak of the Mexican Revolution and generally is referred to simply as the 20th of November much as Americans usually call their Independence Day “Fourth of July.”

In order to promote long weekends, Congress a few years ago decreed that The Anniversary of the Revolution would be celebrated on the third Monday of November. However, since this year the 20th of November falls on a Friday, the Chamber of Deputies voted to make Friday an official holiday this year. That confused matters, since by law Monday must be observed as the holiday. Compromising, the Deputies voted for two long weekends, but spoilsports in the Senate refused to go along.
