- Morelia lights up

By Mary Andrade - Posted on 30 October 2009

Lying about half way between Mexico City and Guadalajara, Morelia is moving ahead with its program of illuminating buildings and monuments in its historic center. Thus far, more than a dozen are lit up each evening. The city, wants to attract more tourists and possibly retired baby-boomers. Among its attractions are four golf courses, one with 27 holes designed by Jack Nicklaus.

Named for a hero in Mexico’s Independence Wars, the city that had been called Valladolid was dominated by religious orders and wealthy plantation owners during the viceregal era. Their monuments remain and have been designated at UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today, Morelia is capital of Michoacan and is a lively university town where the nights never end.
